Why the Small Park at 200 Beonyeong-ro Holds the Names of 102 People
Ulsan Culture Park is located at 200 Beonyeong-ro, Nam-gu, Ulsan Metropolitan City. It is an urban park about 200 m west of the Ulsan Nam-gu Office and approximately 270 m from the Grand Performance Hall of the Ulsan Cultural Arts Center. The Ulsan Metropolitan City webzine introduced it as a walking area behind the Ulsan Cultural Arts Center and KBS Ulsan Broadcasting Station, while the Nam-gu photographic archive contains a view of Ulsan Culture Park taken on June 10, 2020.
The park's main memorial is the Ulsan Anti-Japanese Independence Movement Memorial Tower. Built to honor local independence activists, the tower was completed on February 26, 2021, and the names of 102 independence patriots from Ulsan are engraved around it. Rather than treating the site simply as a park for walking beneath the trees, it is more appropriate to read the names and information on the tower first and then follow the walking path to understand the character of the place.
Yi Ye, 1373–1445: A Statue Remembering Joseon's Diplomacy with Japan
The park contains a statue of Master Yi Ye, Chung Suk-gong Hakpa. Yi Ye was a civil official from Ulsan during the early Joseon period, born in 1373 and deceased in 1445, and is known as the founder of the Hakseong Yi clan. His pen name, “Hakpa,” uses different Chinese characters from the word for an academic school, so it is helpful to distinguish that the name in the statue's title is the person's pen name.
Materials from Ulsan City explain that Yi Ye traveled between Japan and Tsushima more than 40 times during the reigns of King Taejong and King Sejong and contributed to the repatriation of 667 prisoners. Thus, although the Yi Ye statue and the Anti-Japanese Independence Movement Memorial Tower belong to different eras and represent different roles, they can be viewed as an example of how Ulsan preserves memories of relations with Japan and the independence movement together within one park.
270 m to the Grand Performance Hall of the Ulsan Cultural Arts Center: A 30–50-Minute Route
For a first visit, a 30–50-minute route is suitable: set 200 Beonyeong-ro as the destination and look around the Anti-Japanese Independence Movement Memorial Tower, the Yi Ye statue, the walking path, and the spacious open area in that order. A 2025 Nam-gu blog reporter's review mentioned the landscaping around the walking path, tree shade, a fitness area, and an open space suitable for inline skating and bicycle practice.
The Ulsan Cultural Arts Center is located immediately nearby, making it convenient to combine the park with a performance before or afterward. However, this is not a large tourist attraction or indoor exhibition hall; it is better suited to a short outdoor walk and reading the memorial information. Even with shade, summer afternoons can be hot, so bring water. If it is raining or a performance is about to begin, realistically shorten your stay to around 20 minutes.
50 m from the KBS Broadcasting Station Bus Stop, Connected to Ulsan Station by Route 5001
The Ulsan Transportation Management Center's tourism and transportation information recommends taking bus routes 713, 712, 421, 752, or 718 from the Express and Intercity Bus Terminal, getting off at the KBS Broadcasting Station bus stop, and walking 50 m. Since the park is behind KBS Ulsan Broadcasting Station, using this stop as a reference point makes it easy to estimate the location even on a first visit.
From KTX Ulsan Station, take route 5001, get off at the Nam-gu Office bus stop, and walk approximately 689 m. Since the Nam-gu Office is about 200 m east of the park, check the direction toward Beonyeong-ro again in a map app when walking from the Nam-gu Office stop to the park. Bus routes and schedules may change, so check Ulsan City's real-time city bus service information or call 052-229-4214 just before departure.
Free-Entry Outdoor Park; Check Announcements for Separate Opening Hours
Ulsan Culture Park is an outdoor park rather than a paid facility controlled by a fence, so admission is free. However, the park's official opening and closing hours, regular closing days, and dedicated telephone number could not be found in the available public information. If you plan to walk there at night, assess the lighting and weather conditions on site, and do not treat times without official guidance as fixed operating hours.
No separate official website could be confirmed either.
