Baekri Seomseom-gil is a 39.1 km marine tourism road connecting 10 islands by sea bridges, from Dolsan in Yeosu to Yeongnam in Goheung. Nangdo belongs to Hwajeong-myeon, Yeosu, and is introduced as the largest of the four islands between Yeosu and Goheung: Jobaldo, Dunbyeongdo, Jeokgeumdo, and Nangdo.
From the Yeosu side, travelers cross Hwayang Bridge to Jobaldo, Dunbyeong Bridge to Dunbyeongdo, and Nangdo Bridge to enter Nangdo. Nangdo Bridge is an inter-island bridge connecting Dunbyeongdo and Nangdo. It is 640 m long, 12.5 m wide, and has two lanes for round-trip traffic, with spans of 150 m + 170 m + 150 m between its piers. Before the bridges were built, the island depended on boats; today, vehicles can enter, but traces of farming and fishing village life remain. A 1-Hour-50-Minute Ferry from Yeosu Port and Three Access Routes
For travelers by car, the most direct route is to cross Hwayang Bridge, Dunbyeong Bridge, and Nangdo Bridge in succession from Yeosu. From Goheung on the opposite side, Nangdo can be reached via Palyeong Bridge and Jeokgeum Bridge. Nangdo Bridge itself has two lanes for round-trip traffic, so visitors should use a safe place on the island rather than stopping on the bridge to take photographs.
By ferry, the journey from Yeosu Port takes approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes, and Yeosu City states that regular passenger ferries also operate daily from Baekyado Pier. Some sources introduce four city-bus services per day on Nangdo, but the official bus route number and operating times have not been confirmed. Therefore, foreign visitors relying solely on public transportation may find it difficult to coordinate departure times from Yeosu Port or Baekyado Pier with travel within the island as one itinerary.>
Open Free of Charge All Year, but Why You Should Choose Your Destination from the Entrance
According to Yeosu City information, Nangdo is open year-round, every day of the year, and admission is free. The inquiry telephone number is 061-659-1760, and the official information page is Nangdo’s page on the Yeosu City tourism website. This is not a tourist attraction where visitors purchase a separate ticket at a paid ticket booth before entering a specific facility; instead, visitors move among the island and coastal paths according to their chosen destinations.
The recommended time varies depending on the route selected. Circuit Trail 1, from Nangdo Beach through Nangdo Breakwater, Sinseondae, Nampo Lighthouse, and to Santaba Beach, usually takes 50 minutes. Circuit Trail 2, from Santabao Street through Jangsageum Beach to Yeokgimi Junction, takes 1 hour. Circuit Trail 3, from Yeokgimi Junction to Gyupo Pier, takes 40 minutes. Walking all three routes takes approximately 4 hours according to visitor accounts, so it is more practical to drive onto Nangdo and set aside half a day.>
Twin Dragon Cave and Nampo Lighthouse on the 50-Minute Circuit Trail 1
The shortest Circuit Trail 1 begins at Nangdo Beach and continues through Nangdo Breakwater, Sinseondae, and Nampo Lighthouse to Santaba Beach. At the end of Sinseondae are two caves side by side through which seawater flows, called Twin Dragon Cave. Benches are placed at various points along the circuit trail, so visitors may stay longer than the stated walking time of 50 minutes.
Along the coast connected to Sinseondae, Cheonseondae can be approached closely only at low tide. If you walk with the sea on your right from Cheonseondae, you will reach Nampo Lighthouse at the southernmost point of Nangdo. Much of this section passes directly in front of the beach and around rocks, so avoid it on windy days and take care to prevent accidents when passing the rocks at Sinseondae and Cheonseondae.>
The Difference Between the 1-Hour Circuit Trail 2 and 40-Minute Circuit Trail 3
Circuit Trail 2 runs from Santabao Street through Jangsageum Beach to Yeokgimi Junction, with a stated travel time of 1 hour. Because the route combines a beach and village roads, it is better suited to an itinerary that explores the island’s coastal living spaces as well as its scenery than to visitors who simply want to see the sea quickly.
Circuit Trail 3 runs from Yeokgimi Junction to Gyupo Pier and has a stated travel time of 40 minutes. Adding the 50 minutes for Circuit Trail 1, 1 hour for Circuit Trail 2, and 40 minutes for Circuit Trail 3 gives 2 hours and 30 minutes of walking alone; the entire itinerary, including breaks and transfers, takes approximately 4 hours according to visitor accounts. Nangdo Beach is introduced as suitable for family swimming and camping, but paths close to the coast may be dangerous depending on weather conditions.>
How to See Jeotsem Rock, Turtle Rock, and the Dinosaur Footprints on Sado
Nangdo’s tourist resources include the legend of Jeotsem Rock and Turtle Rock, which is associated with a legend that Admiral Yi Sun-sin conceived the turtle ship here. These stories are reasons to explore the island’s coastal terrain and village roads rather than simply crossing the bridge and returning. The Santaba Stone Wall Road is another place that can be visited on Nangdo.
Neighboring Sado is described as having the Korean version of Moses’ Miracle, where seven islands—including Jeungdo, Chudo, Jangsado, Nageut, Yeonmok, and Jungdo—are connected, as well as dinosaur footprints and columnar joints. However, information about free access to Nangdo’s Baekri Seomseom-gil does not guarantee the boat and tidal conditions required for an excursion to Sado. Even on Nangdo, access to Cheonseondae is limited to low tide, so when coastal formations are the goal, the day’s tides and weather are central to planning the itinerary.>
Free Parking Information and Limitations for Wheelchair Visitors
Parking information is inconsistent. Yeosu City materials list both no parking lot and free parking, while Korea Tourism Organization materials list a free parking lot near Nangdo Beach. The parking location and capacity have not been confirmed, so drivers of large vehicles and those visiting during peak season should avoid arbitrarily blocking roads around the beach.
Yeosu City’s official information states that stroller rental is unavailable, there are no facilities for visitors with disabilities, and wheelchair rental is unavailable. The circuit trails include sections in front of the beach and rocky sections, and windy days should be avoided, so all three routes may not be suitable for wheelchair or stroller users. Whether the site is cash-only, whether photography is prohibited, and whether English information or an audio guide is available have not been confirmed.
Nangdo Nangman Masil Requires a Reservation
‘Nangdo Nangman Masil,’ an experience program in which visitors tour Nangdo while listening to stories from an ecological tourism guide who is a village resident, is available by reservation rather than operating on a regular basis. Visitors cannot simply join on site at a set time, so an itinerary for walking the circuit trails should be distinguished from one including the guided program.
