September 6, 2019: Linking Bukhang, Yudalsan, and Gohado across 3.23 km

The Mokpo Marine Cable Car opened on September 6, 2019. The route runs for a total of 3.23 km from Bukhang Station via Yudalsan Station to Gohado Station, consisting of a 2.41 km land section and a 0.82 km marine section. The one-way ride from Bukhang to Gohado takes approximately 20 minutes, while a round trip takes about 40 minutes.

The route’s defining feature is that it crosses a mountain, harbor, and island in one journey. The cabin leaves Bukhang and passes near Il-deungbawi Rock on the upper slopes of Yudalsan, then crosses the sea toward Gohado after stopping at Yudalsan. The No. 5 tower in the marine section is reportedly 155 m high, so travelers with a severe fear of heights may find a regular cabin less stressful than a Crystal Cabin with a transparent floor.

A 40-minute route starting at 240 Haeyangdaehak-ro, Bukhang Station

The departure point by address is Bukhang Station, 240 Haeyangdaehak-ro, Mokpo-si, Jeollanam-do. One-way tickets are issued separately for the Bukhang-to-Gohado and Gohado-to-Bukhang directions. If you get off at the intermediate Yudalsan Station and end your journey, the fare for the remaining section cannot be refunded. A separate one-way ticket is required to travel in the opposite direction from Yudalsan.

If you only take the round trip, allow 40 minutes. If you also want to visit the coastal deck and observatory at Gohado, allowing 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours is more realistic. Gohado Observatory is introduced as being about a 10-minute walk from Gohado Station. Considering the return cabin schedule to Bukhang, you should return to the station with plenty of time before ticket sales close, one hour before the final departure.

Three hours of free parking at Bukhang and Gohado with a boarding-pass QR code

Visitors arriving by car can use the parking lots at the stations. Cable car passengers are advised that three hours of free parking is applied using the QR code on their boarding pass, so keep the boarding pass until parking payment has been settled. After three hours, a fee of 2,000 won per 60 minutes is charged, with a weekday daily maximum of 10,000 won.

The weekend daily maximum is 20,000 won, and the daily maximum is also listed as 20,000 won on peak-season weekends in March, April, June, August, and October. If you plan a long walk at Gohado, it is easy to exceed the three free hours. It is therefore advisable to calculate your payment time by adding the 40-minute round trip, approximately 20 minutes for the round-trip walk to Gohado Observatory, waiting time, and meal time.

Why you can see Yi Sun-sin’s naval base at Gohado and Mokpo Port in one view

Gohado is known as a place that Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s naval forces used as a new base after their victory at the Battle of Myeongnyang during the Imjin War. Today’s tourist route, in which the cable car reaches Gohado, is not merely transportation to an island; it is also a route that allows visitors to look down from above and understand the terrain of maritime defense and port life facing Mokpo Port.

Yudalsan is Mokpo’s symbolic mountain, situated at the end of the Noryeongsan Mountain Range. The L-shaped route that crosses the Yudalsan ridge from Bukhang before turning toward Gohado was designed to offer successive views of downtown Mokpo, Mokpo Port, Mokpo Bridge, and the Dadohae archipelago. Reports state that Gohado Station has a safety promotion center covering the cable car’s history, construction, and safety.

A 10-minute walk to Gohado Observatory; calculate a separate ticket for getting off at Yudalsan

After getting off at Gohado, it is convenient to visit Gohado Observatory first, introduced as being about 10 minutes from the station. The observatory is said to have been built in the shape of a panokseon warship and is a spot where you can see the cable car, Mokpo Bridge, and coastline together. Because part of the route is exposed to sea winds for an extended period, it is advisable to bring a hat and water in summer and windproof outerwear in winter.

Those planning to get off at Yudalsan Station should understand the ticket structure before deciding. If you depart from Bukhang with a one-way ticket to Gohado and get off at Yudalsan, the unused Gohado section is not refundable, and you must purchase a new one-way ticket to travel in the opposite direction. If walking around Yudalsan is your main purpose, it is safer to calculate the additional fare and transportation down the mountain in advance rather than combining a Bukhang round trip with a Yudalsan stopover.

Not the best choice on windy days or for travelers with a severe fear of heights

The Mokpo Marine Cable Car may suspend operations depending on weather conditions, so it is best to avoid making it the final activity between fixed KTX, bus, or accommodation check-in schedules. Since the facility crosses a 0.82 km marine section and a section with a 155 m tower, check the operating notice before arriving on days when strong winds are forecast.

A rapid charger for electric wheelchairs is registered at Bukhang Station, but the actual conditions for boarding the cabins and using the Gohado walking trails may vary depending on the number of companions and wheelchair specifications. If you need to bring a stroller or wheelchair or require foreign-language assistance, the most reliable option is to call the main number, 061-244-2600, before your visit to ask about boarding availability and same-day assistance services.
