Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Museum was established to carry on the ceramic tradition of Gimhae, which continued from the Gaya period through the Joseon period, and to promote the value of Buncheong ware. Construction began in December 2007, and the museum opened on May 15, 2009, as the “Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Center.” After being registered as a Type 2 museum (exhibition hall) in August 2018, it was renamed its current name in January 2019.

The site area is 1,644㎡, the total floor area is 1,357㎡, and the building area is 731㎡. As of 2024, the museum’s earthenware collection consisted of 91 pieces, and it reopened after facility improvement work in May 2022. Its key significance is that it serves as a place where Gimhae’s regional identity, known as a production area for early Joseon Buncheong ware, is carried forward through exhibitions, education, and competitions.

The most convenient route begins at the first-floor entrance, continues through Exhibition Rooms 1 and 2 and the Special Exhibition Hall, and then goes up by elevator or stairs to the second-floor Exhibition Room 3, #CERA, the Ceramics Experience Hall, and the traditional kiln. The permanent exhibition covers ceramic culture and Buncheong ware, while the Special Exhibition Hall presents exhibitions by regional artists and competition-winning works.

In January 2025, the special exhibition “15 Years of the Republic of Korea Buncheong Ceramics Grand Exhibition” was held, and from May 22 to June 3, 2026, invited artist Gang Yeong-mi’s solo exhibition “Blooming” took place. The museum is closed every Monday, January 1, and the day of Seollal and Chuseok. If Monday is a public holiday, it closes the following day. Bringing food and beverages inside and entry by pets other than guide dogs are prohibited, and flash photography, tripod photography, and commercial photography are not permitted in the exhibition rooms. Allow 40–60 minutes for quietly reading the exhibitions, or 60–90 minutes if also exploring #CERA and the area around the traditional kiln.

Book Exhibition Commentary Seven Days Ahead; Weekend Experiences Open at 10:00 on the Fourth Thursday of Each Month

Exhibition commentary is offered separately from self-guided viewing. Visitors who want a commentary must make a telephone reservation at 055-345-6037 at least seven days in advance. The program takes about 30 minutes and is free of charge. Since the availability of foreign-language commentary is not confirmed in the official information, travelers who need commentary in Korean should call in advance to ask whether it is available.

Ceramics experiences take place at the second-floor Ceramic Studio on Saturdays and Sundays at 13:00, 14:30, and 16:00. Participants must be at least six years old, and reservations for the following month generally open at 10:00 on the last or fourth Thursday of each month. Available programs include making plates, marbling and colorful plates, decorating mugs, and decorating ceramic dolls and tile frames. It takes 6–8 weeks to receive completed works after the experience; participants may choose in-person pickup or delivery by courier for an additional shipping fee.

Ten Minutes by Taxi from Jinyeong Station; City Bus 44 Takes 40 Minutes to Jillye

For rail travelers, the simplest option is to take a taxi for about 10 minutes from KTX Jinyeong Station. The museum’s official information estimates approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes from Seoul Station to Jinyeong Station, about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Daejeon Station, and about 50 minutes from Dongdaegu Station. However, train frequency and timetables change frequently, so check the Korail schedule again on the day of travel.

From Gimhae Bus Terminal, take city bus 44 toward Jillye; according to the official information, buses run every 20–30 minutes and the journey takes about 40 minutes. Intercity buses from Busan Seobu Bus Terminal to Jillye are listed as running approximately every 30 minutes and taking about 50 minutes. By car, turn left toward Jillye-myeon at the Jillye Interchange on the Namhae Expressway; the museum is about five minutes away and has its own parking lot.

How to Combine the November Buncheong Ceramics Festival with Clayarch Gimhae Museum

The museum is located in Jillye’s ceramic arts and culture district, close to Clayarch Gimhae Museum. Clayarch Gimhae Museum is located at 275-51 Jillye-ro, Jillye-myeon, making it easy to visit both in a single day. However, the two institutions have different operating hours and fee systems, so check each one’s same-day information before planning your route.

The Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Festival is held in the area around the museum and Clayarch Gimhae Museum. The 30th festival in 2025 took place from November 4 to 9 and included exhibitions of ceramic works, pottery-making, and traditional kiln experiences. Even when admission to the festival is free, some experiences may have a fee, so do not assume that the festival experiences have the same conditions as the museum’s regular weekend programs.

What the 2026 Agreement with Four Museums Reveals About the Buncheong Network

In March 2026, Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Museum signed a memorandum of understanding with Sangju Museum, Goheung Buncheong Museum, Daegaya Museum, and Yangsan Municipal Museum to promote Buncheong ware cultural heritage. This can be viewed as part of a recent effort to connect production areas for Buncheong ware with research, exhibition, and cultural exchange, extending beyond a single regional ceramics exhibition hall.

The museum has stated that it plans to organize promotional booths and academic symposiums at the Gimhae Buncheong Ceramics Festival each autumn. If you are encountering Buncheong ware for the first time, rather than looking only at the shapes of the exhibits, pay attention to why Gimhae’s story—from the Gaya tradition of earthenware to Joseon Buncheong ware—is used as the museum’s starting point.
