BRT Small Art Museum
A free public exhibition space that began in an unused area on the first floor of the BRT transfer center in Naseong-dong, Sejong City, and is now used as a permanent exhibition hall for Hangeul culture. Although the exhibition hall is modest in size at 165㎡, it clearly reflects the changes in Sejong City’s cultural policy—from its opening in Hansol-dong in 2018, through its expanded relocation to Naseong-dong in 2022, to its conversion to a Hangeul-themed venue in 2025.
Why It Is Located at 7-7, Naseongnam-ro, on the First Floor of the Naseong-dong BRT Transfer Center
BRT Small Art Museum is located at 7-7, Naseongnam-ro, Sejong Special Self-Governing City, and occupies an independent ground-floor building equipped with a 165㎡ exhibition room and an education room. As its name suggests, it was created by converting unused space on the first floor of the Naseong-dong BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) Transfer Center into an exhibition venue, so visitors can enter directly through the transfer center entrance without having to look for a separate museum building.
Its character changed once again starting in April 2025. Sejong City announced that it would provide this space as the 'Permanent Exhibition Hall of Hangul Culture' as part of its Hangul Culture City project, and since then, the principle has been to exhibit only works based on Hangul.
From the First Phase in Hansol-dong to the Second Phase in Naseong-dong: How Unused Space Became an Art Museum
Although Sejong City's population grew rapidly after the development of the new city and an influx of artists continued, exhibition spaces for visual art activities remained scarce. One of the venues opened to address this problem was BRT Small Art Museum, which first opened in 2018 after converting unused space at the First Village BRT Transfer Center in Hansol-dong into an exhibition venue.
This system, known as the 'First-Phase Hansol-dong BRT Small Art Museum,' came to an end in August 2022, when it moved and expanded as the 'Second-Phase Naseong-dong BRT Small Art Museum' in the same year. The current address, 7-7, Naseongnam-ro, is the site of this second phase. At the time of the move, the Sejong City Cultural Foundation expanded the scale of operations by planning 17 rental exhibitions and curated exhibitions through an open call that year alone.
Tuesday–Sunday, 10:00–18:00; However, Holiday Closures Vary by Exhibition
The regular operating hours listed on the official Hangul Culture City Sejong page are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with Mondays and national public holidays generally designated as closure days. However, actual curated exhibition notices show exceptions to this rule. Both the October 2024 and April 2025 exhibitions stated in their notices that the museum would be closed on Mondays but operate normally on public holidays; in October 2024, visitors could in fact view the exhibitions on National Foundation Day and Hangul Day.
Therefore, if you plan to visit on a weekday public holiday, it is safest to check the individual notice for the exhibition currently in progress once more. Admission is always free, and group visits can be booked by email ([email protected]). 2024–2025: Reborn as a Permanent Exhibition Hall Centered on Hangul
The curated exhibition 'Hangul Dresses in Art,' held throughout October 2024, brought together artists who had worked with Hangul as their subject, including Kang Byung-in, Geum Bo-seong, Kim Jong-geon, Ahn Sang-soo, Yeo Tae-myeong, Oh Chi-gyu, Lee Sang-bong, Lee Sang-hyeon, Lee Il-gu, Lee Jong-seon, Jang Sa-ik, Jeong Byeong-gyu, Chae Byeong-rok, and Choi Min-ryeol, along with Sejong-based artists Kim Do-yeong, Kim Dong-yeon, and Yoo Gyeong-ja. To help visitors understand the works, exhibition interpretation programs were also offered six times a day.
This trend continued with the designation of the 'Permanent Exhibition Hall of Hangul Culture' in April 2025. Its first permanent exhibition was 'Eumcha District,' a solo exhibition by artist Lee Chae-ron, who had been active in the Sejong area for more than ten years. Behind this change is the policy context that Sejong City was designated the nation's first and only Hangul Culture City and is pursuing a Hangul culture project from 2025 to 2027, with 10 billion won each in national and local funding, for a total of 20 billion won over three years.
43 Minutes by BRT from Osong Station, with a Direct Connection from the Naseong-dong Stop
Sejong City does not have an official KTX station, so the nearest railway gateway is Osong Station. It takes about 43 minutes from Osong Station to the Naseong-dong stop on BRT buses B1 (formerly route 1001), B2 (formerly route 990), and B3 (formerly route 757), while the trip from Daejeon Station to the Naseong-dong stop takes about one hour on B1. After getting off at the Naseong-dong stop, the Naseong-dong BRT Transfer Center building, where BRT Small Art Museum is located, is right next to the stop.
If traveling by car, a transfer parking lot is available in the basement of the Naseong-dong BRT Transfer Center. A visitor review from summer 2023 mentioned that parking there was free for one hour and convenient because there was ample space as well as discounts for pregnant women and electric vehicles.
Summer 2023's 'On the Way to the Picture Garden': An Exhibition Worth Visiting with Children
BRT Small Art Museum has not always held exhibitions exclusively about Hangul. From July 18 to August 20, 2023, the curated exhibition 'On the Way to the Picture Garden' was held after the move to Naseong-dong. Visitor reviews from the time say that the exhibition was popular with families visiting on rainy weekends because it included an art-flowerpot-making experience alongside viewing the paintings. They also note that the transfer center building itself has a landscaped garden area, making it a pleasant place to take a walk after viewing the exhibition.
As these examples show, the programs at this venue vary considerably in character depending on the season and year. Since its designation as a permanent Hangul exhibition hall in 2025, exhibitions featuring Hangul have been central, but earlier materials show that painting, calligraphy, and hands-on programs had been operated in rotation.
Not a Half-Day Itinerary — Which Travelers Is It Suited To?
Because the exhibition room is a single 165㎡ space, this is not a place that requires setting aside an entire day like a large municipal art museum. However, admission is free and the museum is located within the transportation hub of the Naseong-dong BRT Transfer Center, making it suitable for a short visit of around 30 minutes while waiting for a transfer when traveling by BRT from Osong Station or Daejeon, or before or after an errand near Naseong-dong.
Conversely, if you are expecting large blockbuster-style exhibitions that change every week or a permanent collection of holdings, it would be better to look elsewhere. This is a public exhibition venue that makes use of unused space and is operated by the Sejong City Cultural Tourism Foundation, so the exhibition scale and themes change substantially from period to period. Since whether it opens on national public holidays also varies by exhibition notice, it is especially important to make a habit of checking the notice for the relevant period before visiting.
