Danyang Danseong Mural Village, Coloring Memories of Submersion
Danseong Mural Village is a free mural attraction set along the winding alleys of Sangbang-ri and Habang-ri in Danseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, North Chungcheong Province. In about an hour, you can explore murals depicting old Danyang scenery from the 1960s and 1970s, the story of Toegye Yi Hwang and Duhyang, trick art, and photo zones. Danyang Hyanggyo is also nearby.

A Village Beginning at 16 Chunghon-ro, at Danseong-myeon Office
Danseong Mural Village is located in Sangbang-ri and Habang-ri, Danseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. Its official address is [27025] 16 Chunghon-ro, Danseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do (Danseong-myeon Office). Travelers may find it easier to enter this address into a navigation system or map app and search for Danseong-myeon Office first.
This is not a separate indoor exhibition hall but an outdoor tourist attraction where visitors walk through alleys among residents’ everyday living spaces. A mural section stretches for about 500 m along the walls of Sangbang Village, and the winding old alley layout remains, so the entire village cannot be seen from one spot.
From a 2014 Volunteer Art Project to a 1.1 Billion Won Environmental Improvement Project
Danseong Mural Village began with artists donating their talents to revive a village that had suffered the pain of submersion. In 2014, the Danyang Artists Association first painted about 200 m of murals depicting scenes evoking old Danyang, and mural creation continued from that year onward.
In May and June 2017, students from Konkuk University’s Glocal Campus filled the alley walls under the theme “Dreams and Hope.” As part of a rural-center revitalization project, Danyang-gun invested 1.1 billion won in an environmental improvement project for the mural street beginning in March 2020.
Old Danyang and Toegye Yi Hwang Along a 500 m Alley
The mural village consists of five themed paths. Its themes include scenes of old Danyang, the story of Toegye Yi Hwang and Duhyang, and Danyang Mancheonha Skywalk, presenting local memories and Danyang’s tourism image alongside more conventional character murals.
The approximately 500 m of walls in Sangbang Village feature a mixture of paintings depicting old Danyang landscapes from the 1960s and 1970s, animation characters, and the Buddhist text Parents’ Grace Sutra. Murals themed around Confucianism and tradition are also present, giving each alley a different atmosphere.
Free and Open at All Times, but Still a Residential Alley
Danseong Mural Village is listed as open at all times, and admission is free. It is described as open year-round, with no ticket booth or ticket-purchasing process; viewing the entire village takes about one hour.
Solar-powered lights are installed, and visitors are told that the village can also be viewed in the evening. However, at night, visitors should remember that these are alleys with residents’ homes and avoid making loud noises or entering private property. Since no confirmed information is available regarding photography restrictions, English guidance, audio guides, queues, or cash-only payment, it is safest not to expect such separate services.
From Dong Seoul Bus Terminal and Cheongnyangni Station to Danyang
Buses from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Danyang are listed as operating nine times a day from 07:00 to 18:00, with a travel time of about 2 hours 30 minutes. The Korea Tourism Organization provides directions to Seonamgol Ecological Trail: take bus numbers 531, 405, 801, 416, 403, or 412 from the Danuri Center Front bus stop to Habang Bus Stop, followed by about 30 minutes and a 300 m walk. This information is a transportation reference for accessing a nearby tourist site, not dedicated transportation for Danseong Mural Village, so visitors should confirm the drop-off point with the driver or in a map app rather than treating it as definitive.
Parking is reported to be available, but the exact parking lot location and parking fees could not be confirmed. Because the village has winding alleys and colorful stairs, wheelchair and stroller accessibility is also unconfirmed. An Itinerary Combining Danyanghyanggyo at 0.1 km with Historic Sites on Habang 3-gil
Danyanghyanggyo is 0.1 km from Danseong Mural Village, at 26 Chunghon-ro, Danseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. Visiting the hyanggyo after touring the mural alleys allows travelers to experience Danseong-myeon’s Confucian and traditional themes through both paintings and an actual historic site.
Uhwa Bridge Stele and Tago Cliff Inscription are each listed as 0.3 km away, and both are located at 24 Habang 3-gil, Danseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. For a longer itinerary, a day course is suggested from Danseong-myeon Mural Village to Seonamgol Ecological Trail, Haseonam, Jungseonam, and Sangseonam, followed by Woraksan National Park Danyang Branch. The two-day, one-night itinerary also includes the Suyanggae Prehistoric Relics Exhibition Hall.
Take Photos While Respecting the Residents’ Alleys
Photo spots are installed throughout the mural village, and colorful stairs and trick art are introduced as photography locations. Since the trick art and murals are not indoor exhibits, visitors must follow the alleys and find the various spots themselves. Allowing about one hour for the full route is appropriate.
This is not a large tourist facility with separate entrances, ticket offices, and waiting areas. Do not lean against walls for photos or enter homes, and immediately follow any no-photography signs or requests from residents.
