A Hanok Photo Gallery That Began with the 2013 “Our Neighborhood” Exhibition
Seohakdong Photo Art Museum is a space in Jeonju created by photographer Kim Ji-yeon, who renovated a hanok at the end of an alley in Seohak-dong and transformed it into an exhibition hall and café. The museum opened in March 2013 with the “Our Neighborhood” exhibition.
Since 2006, operator Kim Ji-yeon has established and run the community museum “Gyenam Mill” in a mountain village in Jinan, North Jeolla Province. Since 2010, the Seohak-dong area has developed into an artists’ village as artists gathered there, and this museum is a photography-centered space created amid that change.
Exhibition History in Seohak-dong, Visited by More Than 80 Artists
During the ten years after its opening, more than 80 artists held invited exhibitions here. The exhibition history includes names such as John Berger, Roh Soon-taek, Jo Chun-man, Lim Anna, Seong Nam-hoon, Kang Hong-gu, Kim Jang-seop, and Park Ha-seon.
In addition to special exhibitions featuring local artists, exhibitions continued through exchanges with Ryugaheon Gallery in Seoul. In 2023, the “Warm and Friendly” exhibition was held from June 6 to June 18, while Jang Mi-yeon’s solo exhibition “Modernization 筋大化-CONVERSION EPISODE 1” took place from November 28 to December 10.
An Exhibition Hall Overlooking a Small Courtyard Through Rafters and Glass Windows
The exhibition space was created by renovating a traditional hanok residence, while preserving the ceiling rafters and wooden pillars. A small courtyard can be seen through the glass windows at the back of the exhibition hall, and visitor reviews estimate the exhibition space at approximately 10 pyeong.
Inside the main gate are a modest courtyard and a guestbook, while photographs of the artworks are sold at the café. The office space is also used for seminars or accommodation during exchange exhibitions, so it is more accurate to view the museum as a place centered on the exhibition areas rather than one where general visitors can freely enter every space.

Walking from the Hanok Village via Namcheongyo Bridge and the Alleys

When approaching from Hanok Village, pass the parking lot of Jeonju National University of Education Elementary School and enter through the alley entrance. The walk from Nambu Market to Seohak-dong Art Village is described as taking about five minutes, and the museum is at the end of the art alley. The alley has an atmosphere reminiscent of the 1990s, so in practice, look for the white “Seohakdong Photo Art Museum” sign.
Plan Without Parking and Consider the Uneven Levels and Narrow Hanok Layout
