The Home of Jeonbuk Traditional Korean Music, Founded in 1986
The Jeonbuk State Traditional Korean Music Center is a provincial traditional Korean music institution located in Deokjin-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeonbuk State. The ordinance establishing the Jeollabuk-do Traditional Korean Music Center was approved in June 1986, and the center opened on October 15 of the same year. Its purpose was to train traditional Korean music professionals and successors and to serve as a hub for the dissemination and training of traditional Korean music.
In July 1987, the center launched a research group, and on October 5, 1988, it founded the Jeollabuk-do Provincial Traditional Korean Music Orchestra with 35 members. At the time, it consisted of 8 gayageum players, 6 geomungo players, 6 haegeum players, 3 daegeum players, 3 piri players, 5 pansori singers, and 3 dancers. Today, the institution emphasizes performance, education, and research.

One performance information example lists a viewing duration of approximately 90 minutes, but this does not apply to every performance.
Distinguishing Free Admission from Paid Performances Costing 10,000 Won
The official website states that admission and parking are free. However, this should not be interpreted to mean that every performance is free. The 53rd Regular Concert of the Orchestra, “Art Nouveau IV,” announced on July 10, 2026, cost 10,000 won for all seats, and admission was restricted to those aged 8 and older.
The venue for “Art Nouveau IV” was Moak Hall at the Korea Sori Culture Center, not the Jeonbuk State Traditional Korean Music Center. In contrast, a children’s participatory dance drama scheduled for July 23–24, 2026, was announced as four performances at 10:30 and 13:30 in Gwon Sam-deuk Hall on the third floor of the main center, with an admission age of 3–5 years. Check the venue, fee, and age requirements together on the booking screen.
Performance Booking: From Member Login to Seat Selection
Performance reservations are made after member login, and up to two people can be booked at one time. Since seats are selected according to the number of people in the reservation, groups of three or more exceed the maximum number allowed under one account. The age requirements for each performance must also be observed.
Reservations can be changed or canceled only during the reservation period for the relevant performance. A penalty applies for an unauthorized no-show after booking, and a first strike remains valid for one year from the performance date. Three consecutive unauthorized no-shows result in a three-strikes penalty, making performance reservations impossible for one year, so it is safest to cancel within the reservation period if you cannot attend.
Rules Foreign Visitors May Be Especially Likely to Miss Inside the Venue
Mobile phones must be turned off during performances, and moving around during a performance should be avoided. Bringing food or beverages inside is also prohibited, as are photography and recording during performances. Visitors who want to take photos should plan to do so only in the lobby before the performance begins or in permitted outdoor areas.
It has not been confirmed whether photography is restricted throughout the building or whether English information or audio guides are available. Therefore, if you may have difficulty understanding performance information in Korean, it is practical to contact the performance inquiry line at 063-290-5534 in advance to ask about the admission age, seating, and performance language.
Traditional Korean Music Experience Day: Wednesdays, 10:00–12:00
Traditional Korean Music Experience Day is held every Wednesday from 10:00 to 12:00 for institutions, organizations, and students. It is not a program that individual travelers can join immediately on site; instead, groups must submit an application in advance, such as through a desired facility. For group trips or school visits, contact the Education and Arts Office first rather than arriving without an appointment.
The Youth Traditional Korean Music Class is for children aged 7 through 13 and offers four subjects—pansori, gayageum, danso, and pungmul—with eight classes and a total capacity of 200 students. Classes are held once a week on Saturdays for 50 minutes. Tuition is 30,000 won per person, paid in advance for 12 sessions. Gayageum applicants must be at least third-grade elementary school students, and enrollment is offered on a first-come, first-served basis after registering as a website member, applying online, and paying the tuition.
The Address Is Clear, but Bus and Station Information Requires Separate Checking
The official directions page provides the main center’s address, 400 Gwon Sam-deuk-ro, and a map link. It does not provide bus routes, stops, subway stations, exit numbers, or walking time from a stop to the building. Foreign visitors departing from Jeonju Station or Jeonju Express Bus Terminal should not guess the route number; instead, check real-time public transportation directions in a map app.
Parking is officially free. However, a report from February 2026 stated that the above-ground and underground parking lots can become crowded with vehicles belonging to staff, performers, and trainees, and that the narrow access passage to the underground parking lot frequently causes congestion. Although reports indicated that outside visitors could also use the parking lot, public transportation or arriving with plenty of time is preferable to driving during performance hours.
Wheelchair Access and the Locations of Other Traditional Korean Music Facilities
Barrier-free accessibility information lists two designated accessible parking spaces, a ramp leading to the entrance, a main entrance equipped with a ramp and manual door, and an accessible restroom. No specific official information regarding stroller use was found, so it is advisable to confirm seating arrangements and movement routes by calling the performance inquiry number.
Not all functions of the traditional Korean music center are located in the single building at 400 Gwon Sam-deuk-ro. The Traditional Culture Experience and Training Center is at 258 Jogyeongdan-ro, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju-si, and is used by the Orchestra and Children’s Arts Troupe, among others. Myeongin Hall at the Korea Sori Culture Center is at 31 Sori-ro, Deokjin-gu, Jeonju-si, and is used by the Performance Planning Office, Changgeuk Troupe, Orchestra, and Dance Troupe.
