940m White Sand Beach, the Closest Swimming Area on the East Sea to Sokcho’s Downtown
Sokcho Beach is a directly managed beach designated on public waters at 1464-1, Joyang-dong, Sokcho-si, and official materials list it as 940m long and 20~80m wide. Materials from a national environmental research agency describe this beach as a sandy beach about 950m long and about 40m wide, and as the beach on the East Sea coast closest to the city center.
Behind the beach, pine groves and downtown lodging and dining areas continue on, and Sokcho Tourism says it is about a 5-minute walk from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal. Rather than just seeing the sea and leaving, it is a good layout for combining a walk to the path toward Oeongchi to the south, so if swimming is not your main purpose, allowing 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours including the round trip is appropriate.

The 2026 opening period for Sokcho Beach runs from July 3 to August 23, and the beach use hours are announced as 06:00 to 24:00. However, the actual swimming hours are 09:00 to 18:00, so even if you arrive at 6 a.m. or near sunset, the time you may enter the safety-managed swimming zone is different.
The night opening operates from July 21, 2026 to August 12, 2026, and during this period swimming hours are extended to 09:00 to 21:00. Admission is free, but outside the opening period the sea is not a constantly monitored swimming area, so you should recheck waves, rip currents, and weather advisories on site. In Sokcho-si’s 2026 facility status, Sokcho Beach is listed as being staffed with 40 safety personnel (22 daytime, 10 nighttime, 8 late night), 2 water scooters, and 2 rescue boats. Since there are 4 watchtowers and also first-aid rescue boxes and no-swimming signs, you must follow the permitted zones and on-site announcements when entering the water.
Facilities are announced as 3 restrooms, 1 shower and changing area, 6 foot-washing stations, 6 temporary changing booths, 3 storage lockers, and 3 beach equipment rental shops. Camping, cooking, commercial vending, damaging the pine grove, and using fireworks are prohibited within the sandy beach, and motorcycles and mini motorcycles are also prohibited on the beach promenade.

5 Minutes on Foot from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal; For Cars, Check the 4 Parking Lots First
By public transportation, the simplest guidance from Sokcho Tourism is that the beach is about a 5-minute walk from Sokcho Express Bus Terminal. One practical advantage of this beach is that after arriving in Sokcho by express or intercity bus from Seoul and elsewhere, there is often little need to take a taxi again.
Visitors using a car should first rely on the city data for 2026, which says that 4 parking lots are operated at Sokcho Beach. However, during the beach peak season, parking spaces closest to the beach tend to fill up first, so please also consider the possibility that the driver may need to park separately after unloading luggage. For exact fees and whether the lot is full in real time, it is safer to reconfirm just before departure with the Sokcho-si Transportation Division at 033-639-1575 or on-site guidance.

How to Combine the 1.74km Bada Hyanggiro Walk from the South Side of the Beach to Oeongchi
The south side of Sokcho Beach connects with the starting section of Bada Hyanggiro, which leads to Oeongchi Port. Bada Hyanggiro is a 1.74km coastal walking trail made up of 4 sections: the Bamboo Meditation Path, Sky Deck Path, Security Experience Path, and Rock Observation Path. Rather than spending time only on the sand, it is better to change shoes and continue walking south along this route.
Part of this path connects with the Oeongchi coast, where civilian access was restricted after the Korean War. After an armed infiltration incident in June 1970, a security fence was installed, and some of the fence remains along the Security Experience Path. In other words, this promenade is not just a simple coastal deck but a path that passes traces of division and coastal security, so if you are with children, it may be worth reading the context of the fence and signboards together.

Do Not Confuse the 70m×15m “Sea of Light” with Night Swimming Hours
Sokcho Tourism introduces the media art piece “Sea of Light, Sokcho,” created using the sand of Sokcho Beach, as a nighttime tourism photo zone measuring 70m wide by 15m deep. During the night-opening period, swimming is possible until 21:00, but staying on the beach to view the media art and entering the swimming zone are separate matters.
On summer nights, beach use continues until 24:00 even after 21:00, but swimming safety controls may already have ended. Instead of planning to go down near the waterline or enter the sea at night, it is better to view the beach from the sand and promenade, then head toward your lodging or the terminal. During periods without the night opening, swimming hours end at 18:00.

Why Stroller and Wheelchair Visitors Need to Check the Route Before Entering the Sand
Sokcho Beach is included in Gangwon Province’s project to create an accessible tourism city, and the installation of accessible facilities such as wheelchairs and barrier-free trails is being promoted. However, since the center of the beach is sandy, visitors using mobility aids or strollers should first determine the range they can reach via the deck and paved paths, and plan long-distance movement on the sand together with companions.
During the summer operation period, there are 3 restrooms, 1 shower and changing area, and 6 temporary changing booths, allowing you to create a post-swim cleanup route. Since the official materials do not confirm whether foreign-language guidance is provided continuously, it is better to prepare a translation app and the destination address, and in an emergency to find on-site safety personnel or the administrative support center.
