Hwanseon Cave is located in a limestone area of Daei-ri, Singi-myeon, Samcheok-si, and was first recorded in Cheokjuji, written by Heo Mok in 1662. The description of it as a limestone cave formed approximately 530 million years ago shows that this is not merely an indoor tourist facility, but a natural heritage site shaped by long-term geological processes.

The Samcheok Daei-ri Cave Zone, to which Hwanseon Cave belongs, was designated Natural Monument No. 178 on June 14, 1966. Its total length is approximately 6.2 km, of which 1.6 km is open to the general public. The cave was opened for public viewing on October 15, 1997.

Ongjwa Platform, Yeouibong, and a Cave Waterfall Along the 1.6 km Open Section

Inside the cave, visitors can see stalactites, stalagmites, and columns, as well as flowstone resembling terraced rice paddies, the Ongjwa Platform known for its lotus-flower shape, the large stalactite Yeouibong, flowstone and curtain formations, cave pearls, and cave coral. Formations named the Beauty, Mary, and Goblin's Club are visitor-given names based on the shapes of these natural formations.

A total of 47 animal species have been discovered in Hwanseon Cave. Four species, including the Hwanseon longhorn beetle, were found only in this cave or are recorded as having been first discovered here. Touching the rocks or leaving the designated route can affect the formations and cave ecology, so it is important to follow the handrails and prescribed trail.

Admission Hours: 09:00–17:00 from March to October and 09:00–16:00 from November to February

Hwanseon Cave's visiting hours are listed as 09:00–17:00 during the summer season from March to October and 09:00–16:00 during the winter season from November to February. The cave is closed on the 18th of every month; if the 18th falls on a holiday or holiday period, it is closed the following day. Since the closing time differs between winter and summer, visitors planning a late-afternoon itinerary should check the calendar first.

Admission is 4,500 won for adults, 3,000 won for seniors and youths, and 2,000 won for children and soldiers. Monorail Separate from Hwanseon Cave Admission: Check Whether It Is Operating in August 2026

The Hwanseon Cave admission ticket and monorail fare are separate. According to the available information, the monorail costs 7,000 won round trip or 4,000 won one way for those aged 13 and over, and 3,000 won round trip or 2,000 won one way for children. It began operating in April 2010 and has helped visitors access the cave entrance on the slope of Deokhangsan Mountain.

However, the monorail may stop operating depending on maintenance and facility conditions. Although reports said that operations resumed in August 2025 after being suspended in July 2025, as of August 7, 2026, visitors must call 033-541-9266 before visiting to confirm whether it is operating that day and how long the wait is. If it is not operating, visitors must walk uphill to the entrance, so it may not be suitable for travelers who find stairs and steep slopes difficult.

55–65 Minutes by Bus from Downtown Samcheok to Hwanseon Cave, with Singi Station Connections Essential

The destination for drivers is the Daei Cave Tourism Center, at 800 Hwanseon-ro, Singi-myeon, Samcheok-si, Gangwon State. Parking for both small and large vehicles is reportedly available, making the site suitable for rental cars and tour buses. However, on weekends and during peak season, arriving in the morning is advantageous because visitors need to allow time for ticketing and waiting for the monorail after parking.

For public transportation, a Samcheok City information example states that buses to Hwanseon Cave run five times a day and take approximately 55–65 minutes. For rail travelers, checking for a bus connection to Hwanseon Cave from Singi Station or Singi Intersection is the most practical approach. However, the number of services and timetables may change, so travelers should check both Samcheok City's bus information and the tourism center before departure.

A Cave Around 15°C Even in Summer: What to Bring for Slippery Surfaces and Stairs

Rural travel information states that the temperature inside Hwanseon Cave does not rise much above 15°C even in midsummer. Although outdoor temperatures are high from March to October, it is advisable to bring a light jacket and wear sneakers with nonslip soles because of moisture and wet surfaces on the floor.

There is no stroller rental service, and there are no restrooms inside the cave. Wheelchair and stroller users should assume that independent access throughout the entire route may be difficult because of ramps, stairs, and the monorail's operating status, and should consult their companions and the tourism center in advance. Pets are also restricted. Since the interior lighting is dim and there are uneven surfaces, visitors should move slowly while watching their step.

Da Geum Cave and Hwanseon Cave are known to be close to each other in the Daei-ri Cave Zone, but they have different visiting procedures. Da Geum Cave operates mainly by time-slot reservations, while Hwanseon Cave uses on-site ticketing. When visiting both on the same day, it is safest to fix the Da Geum Cave reservation time first and leave at least two additional hours for Hwanseon Cave, including travel, ticketing, and the monorail wait.

Visitor reviews mention that the cave was relatively quiet after opening at 09:00 until around 10:00, but that the number of visitors increased after 11:00. Although this is based on individual reviews, arriving during the first morning time slot is a reasonable choice on weekends and during vacation periods to prepare for variables involving ticketing, parking, and the monorail.

Visitor information repeatedly warns that the mountain path around the entrance and the cave entry area may be slippery after rain. Bring rainwear that leaves both hands free rather than an umbrella, water-resistant sneakers, and a light jacket. If the monorail is suspended, decide based on your condition that day whether you can manage the sloped walk to the entrance.
