Best Time to Visit

Gangneung Gyeongpodae is best visited in spring. In particular, from early to mid-April, the weather is mild and walks around Gyeongpo Lake are pleasant, making it the most recommended time for foreign travelers.

The best time of day to visit is from early morning to late morning. During this period, it is relatively quiet and easy to walk around. Late afternoon also has a nice atmosphere, but there may be more visitors on weekends.

As for the day of the week, weekdays such as Tuesday through Thursday are best. Weekends, public holidays, and the spring peak season tend to be crowded. If you want a calm visit, a weekday morning is the most practical choice.

In short, the best season is spring, especially early to mid-April, the best time of day is morning, and the best day of the week is weekdays.

How Long to Stay

If you only take a quick look around Gyeongpodae, 30 to 40 minutes is enough, and if you visit in time for a guided explanation program, it takes about 40 minutes longer. If you also walk the Gyeongpo Lake trail, it usually takes 1 to 1.5 hours, and if you include nearby attractions such as Seongyojang and Gangmun Beach, it is best to set aside about half a day.

How to Get There

Gyeongpodae cannot be reached directly by subway. For foreign travelers, the easiest way is to take a city bus from Gangneung Station or the Gangneung Intercity/Express Bus Terminal.

By Subway

Gangneung does not have a subway. Usually, you arrive at Gangneung Station by KTX and then transfer to a bus. There is no exit number.

By Bus

If departing from Gangneung Station, take city bus 202, 202-1, or 202-2 from the stop in front of or across from the station. Get off at the terminal stop, Gyeongpo Beach Stop, then head toward Gyeongpodae.

If you arrive at the Gangneung Intercity/Express Bus Terminal, it is convenient to first move to Gangneung Station or a city bus stop, then transfer to a 202-series bus.

If you are coming from Seoul, take an express bus to the Gangneung Intercity/Express Bus Terminal, then transfer to a city bus.

On Foot

You can walk from Gyeongpo Beach Stop. Follow the signs and walk toward Gyeongpodae. The walking distance after getting off the bus is not long, so foreign travelers can find it easily.

Photo Spots

  • Gyeongpo Beach photo spot: There are several photo zones between the beach promenade and the sandy shore. If you take a photo with your back to the sea, you can capture both the photo sculpture and the beach atmosphere. If you shoot facing the sea, it is great for creating a refreshing photo with the blue ocean in the background. In the morning, the sea looks clearer and brighter, while around sunset it is ideal for soft-toned photos.
  • Gyeongpo Ecological Wetland: A good place if you want nature scenery photos near Gyeongpodae. If you position your camera toward the lake or reed field side on the wetland walking path, you can take photos with a quiet, natural atmosphere. Early morning or late afternoon is best.
  • Beach promenade: As you walk along Gyeongpo Beach, there are many spots ideal for photos with the sea. If you shoot facing the coastline stretching far to the north or south, you can get photos with strong depth and perspective. Right after sunrise, there are fewer people, making it easier to take clean photos.

The atmosphere is relatively calm and romantic, and it is especially recommended for travelers who want to enjoy both the lake and the sea at once. It is nice for a stroll while viewing the night scenery, and it is also a popular photo spot.

The recommended time is from just after sunset until around 9 p.m. Visiting in the evening rather than too late lets you enjoy the lighting at its best and makes it easier to take in the surrounding scenery.

Gangneung is also known as a night tourism destination, with night lighting and various content added to its existing attractions. Depending on the season, night events or special programs may be held, so it is even better to check local tourism information in advance.

Seasonal Guide

Spring (late March to April)
The most popular season at Gyeongpodae is cherry blossom season. You can enjoy cherry blossoms along the approach road to Gyeongpodae and around the Gyeongpo Lake Plaza, and the Gyeongpo Cherry Blossom Festival is held every April, drawing many visitors. At night, lighting is installed so you can also enjoy night cherry blossoms, making it especially good for an evening walk. Around the same time, other spring flower events are also held in Gangneung, making it easy to combine them into a day trip.

Summer (June to August)
This is a great season to enjoy Gyeongpodae and Gyeongpo Beach together. During the day, light outdoor activities such as beach walks, ocean scenery viewing, and bike riding are popular. Since the sun is strong, it is a good idea to bring a hat, sunscreen, and water.

Autumn (September to November)
The cool weather makes walks around the lake and scenic viewing comfortable. It is not the most famous place for vibrant fall foliage, but it is good for relaxed walking in a relatively quiet atmosphere. For photos, morning or sunset is best.

Winter (December to February)
This is a season when you can enjoy the calm scenery of the sea and lake together. In some periods, lighting effects are added, making winter evening walks romantic. The sea breeze is very cold, so prepare a thick coat and cold-weather gear.

Cherry blossom season and weekend evenings are especially crowded, so if possible, an early morning or weekday visit is recommended. For foreign travelers, visiting during the time when the spring night lights are on will let you experience the most beautiful atmosphere of Gyeongpodae.

  • Buses run relatively well toward Gangneung city center and Jungang Market, but taxi service is more convenient than buses when traveling to Gyeongpo Lake and the beach area.
  • When using restaurants around Gyeongpodae, it is a good idea to check vehicle access and parking availability in advance. For example, Gosunsaeng Hwaduk Saengseon-gui is about a 10-minute drive from Gyeongpodae and has parking available.
  • Restaurants in the Chodang Sundubu area may have different operating hours by day of the week and may have regular closing days, so check the hours before visiting.
