Best Time to Visit
Daecheongho is best visited in spring and autumn. The weather is mild, making it easy to enjoy both walking and driving, and it is especially recommended for foreign travelers.
The best time of day is early morning. As the original text mentions demand for dawn trips, the morning atmosphere is pleasant and it is quieter than during the day, allowing for a more relaxed visit. If very early dawn feels too strenuous, morning hours are the most convenient choice.
Weekdays are the best days to visit. On weekends, family visitors and driving traffic increase, so it can get relatively crowded. If you want a quiet atmosphere, Tuesday through Thursday mornings are the most comfortable.
If you plan to visit the Daecheongho Natural Ecology Center as well, be sure to check that it is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and closed every Monday. For a combined visit, Tuesday to Friday mornings are the most practical.
How Long to Stay
If you only visit the main points, 1 to 2 hours is enough at Daecheongho. In general, about half a day is ideal if you include Geumgang Lohas-gil, the Daecheongho Natural Ecology Center, and the Daecheong Dam Water Culture Center. If you also visit nearby attractions such as the Heungjin Village reed forest or the Chansaem Rural Experience Village, it is practical to plan a full-day itinerary.
How to Get There
For Daecheongho, the most practical way is to transfer to a bus rather than going directly from downtown Daejeon. Foreign travelers are advised to first travel within Daejeon city by bus or subway, then transfer to a local bus.
By Subway
There is no subway station directly in front of Daecheongho. Use the Daejeon Metro to get to the city center, then transfer to a bus. After using the subway, it is common to switch to Bus 60.
By Bus
If departing from Daejeon Complex Terminal, take Bus 607 bound for Okcheon from the bus stop on the main road in front of the terminal, and get off at Secheon Samgeori Bus Stop. Then transfer to City Bus 60 to head toward Daecheongho.
City Buses 60 and 71 operate to the Jikdong Bus Terminal. Jikdong is an area often used to access Daecheongho. Since bus intervals may be long before traveling, it is advisable to check real-time service information.
On Foot
After arriving at the Jikdong Bus Terminal, you may need to continue on foot to your destination. This area is quieter than the city center and may not have many directional signs, so it is recommended to walk with a map app open. In particular, foreign travelers should ask the driver or nearby passengers to confirm the stop again before getting off the bus for greater safety.
Photo Spots
- Sad Love Story Filming Site – A representative viewpoint in Section 4 of the Daecheongho Ogaeri-gil trail. It is located around San 3-7, Daecheong-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon, and connects from the waterside viewing deck. If you shoot facing the lake, you can capture the calm water surface and surrounding mountains together. In the early morning, it is good for misty, atmospheric photos, and at sunset, it is ideal for soft-lit landscape shots.
- Waterside Viewing Deck – A deck section near the beginning of Section 4 of Ogaeri-gil, where you can stand close to the lakeshore for photos. On the deck, place your camera toward the center of the lake, and include a bit of the railing in the frame to capture both the path and the water. The air is crisp in the morning, and warm tones come out well in the late afternoon.
- In Front of the Photo Warehouse Building – A vintage-style building right next to Daecheongho Natural Waterside Park. It is especially good for portrait photos; standing in front of the building and shooting toward the lake side or the front of the building can create a moody, emotional feel. The exterior details are most visible from mid-morning to early afternoon.
- Garden of Meditation – One of the popular places on Section 4 of the Hobeonnangman-gil trail, this is a great spot to capture both nature and the lake. Inside the garden, framing the shot so that the lake and trees are visible together creates a calm landscape photo. It is quiet in the morning and suitable for soft backlit photos at sunset.
- Waterside Village Viewpoint – Another popular point on Section 4 of Ogaeri-gil. Shooting in the direction where the water’s edge and traces of the village are visible lets you capture Daecheongho’s unique atmosphere. A wide composition with your gaze directed down toward the lake works well. Visiting in the late afternoon brings softer light that enhances the texture of the scenery.
Night View
The night scenery of Daecheongho is especially beautiful around Geumgang Lohas Daecheong Park and the Daecheong Dam area. As you walk along the deck path, the lights come on, and around Daecheong Dam you can enjoy a nighttime view that changes into vivid colors. With flower trees and colorful lighting blending together, it is also a nice course for a stroll or a casual date.
The atmosphere is quiet and romantic, and it is even more comfortable to walk after rain or on cool evenings with a light breeze. Night viewing is best from after sunset, with the most atmospheric time between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM. In summer, when operating hours are longer than in winter, visits in July and August are especially convenient.
Special night exhibitions are sometimes held in spring. For example, from March 28, 2025, to May 6, 2025, there will be a night exhibition themed around light and art for about 40 days, allowing visitors to enjoy fantastic lighting displays unfolding over nature. Before visiting, it is recommended to check whether night operations and event schedules are available for that season.
Seasonal Guide
Daecheongho has distinct scenery in all four seasons, so it is worth visiting any time of year, but each season offers a different charm.
Spring: This is the most popular season. Daecheongho cherry blossoms usually begin to bloom around April 5 to 8, and they often reach full bloom around April 10. Around the lake there is a 26.6-km section known as the “longest cherry blossom road in the world,” making it especially good for walking and driving. Since it gets crowded on weekends, visiting early in the morning is convenient.
Summer: A great season for enjoying cool waterside scenery. The lake breeze is relatively refreshing, making it suitable for walking, driving, and photography. It can be hot and humid at midday, so bring water, a hat, and sunscreen.
Autumn: The foliage season is beautiful. In nearby areas, the first foliage is expected around October 18, and the peak around November 1. The views of the lake and mountains together are especially beautiful, making it ideal for walking and scenic appreciation.
Winter: This is when you can see a quiet and serene snowy landscape. Rather than colorful natural scenery, the calm charm of the winter lake stands out. Morning and evening temperatures are very cold, so it is best to prepare warm clothing and anti-slip shoes.
Recommended period: For cherry blossoms, early to mid-April is best; for autumn foliage, late October to early November is ideal. Summer is recommended for travelers who want a cool lakeside view, while winter is recommended for those who prefer a quiet atmosphere.
