A summer festival just 5 minutes from the bus terminal, where you dive straight into the sea
What surprised me first when I arrived at Sokcho Beach was that the smell of the sea hit me the moment I got off the express bus terminal. The 2026 Sokcho Summer Festival will be held for three days from July 31 to August 2, 2026, around the outdoor stage area of Sokcho Beach. During the day, the beach fills with the retro game contest 'Reply to the Arcade', the water-gun survival game 'Summer Splash Waterrun', and 'Summer Groove', where local dance teams and the audience mingle on the sand. When the sun goes down, the music show 'Beach Sound' and the electronic DJ party 'Summer Night Electric' heat up the main stage. With water play by day and a stage to jump in front of by night, it was the kind of festival where you could spend an entire day here.
What I especially liked was that the festival lines up perfectly with the beach's nighttime opening. Sokcho Beach operates night access until 9 p.m. from July 21 to August 12, and swimming is allowed in the 130-meter section around the central walkway. For safety, LED buoys are set afloat and water safety staff are stationed throughout, so enjoying the combination of dipping your feet in the night sea while listening to the stage sounds feels like something you can only do here.

A free-entry festival that even foreign solo travelers can enjoy without burden
The first thing that put me at ease was the ticket situation. This festival is an open event that you can simply walk onto the sand for, with no separate admission ticket or advance reservation required. Since there is no need to worry about sold-out entries and you can go anytime, it felt like the most convenient kind of festival for travelers with flexible schedules. That said, seller booths for food, flea markets, and hands-on activities are set up during the festival period, and these local F&B booths sometimes require cash. Most places take cards and mobile payments, but it is more comfortable to bring about 20,000 to 30,000 won in cash in case you run into a small stall.
The route is really simple. If you are coming from Seoul, you can take an express bus to Sokcho from Seoul Express Bus Terminal or Dong Seoul Bus Terminal. It usually takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes, and buses run frequently at 30-minute to 1-hour intervals. Once you get off at Sokcho Express Bus Terminal, just cross the two-lane road and you are right at the entrance to Sokcho Beach, where the Sokcho Eye Ferris wheel stands. It is only a 5-minute walk to the sand even with luggage, so arriving with a suitcase was no problem. If you got off at the intercity bus terminal, take bus 7-1, 9-1, or 9 and get off at the express bus terminal, then walk a short distance east.
English signage is not especially extensive, but most of the programs are content like water-gun fights, dance, and DJ stages that do not require language, so it is easy to enjoy by instinct. I even just lined up for the Waterrun, grabbed a water gun by following the person next to me, and started running. Toilets, foot-wash stations, and unmanned lockers are set up on the beach, and there is even an air gun for shaking off sand running 24 hours a day, so cleaning up after water play was easy.

After 9 p.m., plan your way back in advance
To be honest, the only thing to worry about at this festival is how to get back at night. The performances continue late into the night, but Sokcho is not a big city, so the last buses in town run early. If you are doing a day trip, it will be hard to stay until the very end of the stage program, so I stayed at a place near the beach and walked in. On weekends during the peak season in July and August, the wide beach gets packed so tightly that there is hardly any room to stand, so I recommend arriving in the afternoon when it is less crowded and waiting for the evening stage after securing a spot.
If you are driving, a new parking lot with space for 140 cars has opened near the south gate, but it fills up quickly during peak season, so public transportation is more relaxing. Before and after the festival, from August 3 to 5, there is also the 'Silent DJ Party' at the south gate plaza, where you can enjoy music with headphones on, and the media art show 'Sea of Light, Sokcho' lights up the south gate beach every night, so if you extend your schedule by a day or two, you can enjoy the night sea even more deeply.
- Admission/reservation: Free entry, no advance reservation required
- Payment: Cards and mobile payments accepted in most places; bring a small amount of cash for small booths
- What to bring: Water gun, extra clothes, towel, shoes that can get wet, sunscreen
- Getting back: Overnight stay near the beach recommended if you want to enjoy the night stages
For anyone who wants sea, music, and water play all at once
It is perfect for travelers who want to jump into the East Sea by day and dance in front of a DJ stage by night, or anyone looking for a summer festival they can join spontaneously without a ticket. Add a plate of Sokcho dakgangjeong and some sashimi, and the day becomes complete. It is a great place for a light, easy visit with a water gun in hand, so if you are heading to Gangwon-do in summer, keep two days open and linger by the night sea.
