A Summer Soaked in Water in the Heart of the City, Chuncheon Waterfront Park

When I think of Chuncheon, I usually think of dakgalbi and Nami Island, but this summer I went there for water play. The 2026 Chuncheon Summer Water Festival opens on July 17 and runs for a month until August 17 at Chuncheon Waterfront Park in Samcheondong. It used to be held at Songam Sports Town, but this year the venue moved to the waterfront park and got bigger. The appeal of this festival is that you can enjoy a giant slide right in the city without having to go all the way to a valley or the sea. With a main pool, lazy river, and kids' pool divided into separate areas, solo young adults, families with children, and couples can all enjoy themselves in their own space. At 2:40 p.m. on opening day, there was an opening ceremony with a congratulatory performance, and that day they even offered a half-price admission event.

First Things to Check — Operating Days and Admission Fee

The most important thing here is that you cannot just go any day. Regular operations are only four days a week: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you go on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, you'll find it closed and have to head back. However, from July 27 to August 2, the summer vacation peak period, it is open every day. And since it is an outdoor water park, it may close when it rains, so on cloudy days it is safest to check whether it is operating before you leave.

Admission is 6,000 won for Chuncheon residents and 8,000 won for visitors from other regions. If you are a foreign traveler, you can think of the fee as the 8,000-won non-local rate, which is quite affordable for a water park. Infants under 24 months, people with disabilities, and multicultural families can enter for free. Because of the heat, the park operates on a cycle of two hours of play and a 30-minute break, so it is best to plan your water play time with that rest period in mind.

A Foreign Traveler's Day — From Arrival to Water Play and Food

If you are leaving from Seoul, access is easier than you might expect. The Gyeongchun Line train runs from Sangbong Station every 20 to 30 minutes, and it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to Chuncheon Station. The ITX-Cheongchun is even faster. After getting off at Namchuncheon Station or Chuncheon Station, you can take a taxi or city bus to Samcheondong Waterfront Park; with a wet swimsuit and luggage, a taxi is more convenient on the way back. Since the last train time is fixed, if you are doing a day trip, move to the station with plenty of time after the 5:00 p.m. closing time.

The water play content is definitely substantial. There are water slides for adults, children, and toddlers, and the signature 30-meter giant slide is the kind of ride where, the moment you slip down, a spray of water covers your face and you can't help but scream. The new Challenge Bounce this year lets you pass through obstacles and make your way out, and it looked like not just kids but adults were having even more fun hanging on to it. There are also experience attractions like Roller Ball, so there is something to see even if you do not get into the water.

Food worries are reduced too. This year, a dedicated space for the public delivery app 'Ttanggyeoyo' was newly created, allowing you to order delivery food and eat it inside the festival grounds. Since there are separate dining areas, delivery pickup zones, and recycling areas, it was quite interesting to see people sitting down and waiting for delivered food. For foreign visitors who are not used to app payments or ordering through apps, using a nearby convenience store or the on-site food zone may be simpler.

Things to Know in Advance So You Won't Be Surprised

To start with the essentials, be sure to bring a change of clothes and a towel. Because it is outdoors, shade is limited, so they are useful for drying off after water play.

They pay a lot of attention to safety. Lifeguards are assigned to each water play facility, a comprehensive safety headquarters is operated, and the water quality is disinfected before opening every day and checked every three hours. However, since this is a festival crowded into the hot summer Thursday-to-Sunday schedule, it can get busy during the daytime, so if you want to enjoy it leisurely, I recommend aiming for the morning right after opening. It is hard to confirm how detailed the English guidance is, so it is easier to relax if you think of it as a place to enjoy by reading signs and using your sense of the flow. Since water play itself does not require much language, the burden is low.

It is perfect for families who want to beat the heat and enjoy a fun day of water play near the city, as well as travelers who want to experience a unique Korean summer festival at a low cost. If you spend the whole day enjoying everything from the 30-meter slide to the Challenge Bounce with a single 8,000-won ticket, you will understand with your body why Chuncheon is called the "city of water." Bring an extra set of clothes and dive in for a refreshing soak.
