A festival that begins when sunset rises, Nakseo City Dadaepo

When people think of beaches in Busan, they usually think of Haeundae or Gwangalli, but the stage for the Busan Sea Festival is Dadaepo, at the far western edge. This beach, reached by taking Metro Line 1 all the way to the terminus, is where the Nakdong River and the South Sea meet, so the water is shallow and the sandy shore is wide. When I arrived on a summer evening, the first thing that overwhelmed me was the sky. Dadaepo is regarded as one of Korea's three major sunset spots, along with Jindo Sebang Nakseo and Sacheon Sillan Nakseo, so the 20 to 30 minutes when the sun drops into the sea become the backdrop for the whole festival. This year, the 30th Busan Sea Festival, marking its 30th anniversary, will be held for seven days from Friday, August 7 to August 13 around Dadaepo Beach. It opens on the first night with the 'Dadae Fireworks Show' at the opening ceremony, and then from August 14 to 16, the Dadaepo Sunset Film Festival takes over.

What's interesting is that this beach itself has recently 'reopened.' The eastern sandy shore, which had disappeared due to erosion, was restored after 12 years of coastal improvement work, bringing it back after 30 years with a width of 50 m and a length of 500 m. So you can enjoy both the expansive, grand western sandy shore and the small, charming new eastern beach at the same time.

A day that starts at the terminus of Dadaepo Beach Station

It's easier if you first organize your route. The starting point is 'Dadaepo Beach Station,' the terminus of Busan Metro Line 1. As the name suggests, the sea is right in front of the station, making it the closest subway station to a beach in Korea. I came out of Exit 2 and walked for about 8 minutes, but there is also Exit 4, which leads directly to the sandy shore. After passing the pine-lined walking path, you start hearing the sound of waves from far away, and then you see a sign that says 'DADAEPO' in English, which is the photo spot. By bus, routes 2, 3, 11, 96, and 1000 stop at the 'Dadaepo Beach' bus stop.

Since the festival is a night event, be sure to plan your way home. The last subway trains are not especially early, so there is some room even after the fireworks show ends, but crowds gather all at once right after it finishes. On opening day, one lane on Dadae-ro and three nearby public parking lots are controlled from 4 p.m., so public transportation is much more convenient than driving. If you arrive during the day, I recommend this order.

The site mainly uses Korean-language guidance, so there are not many English signs or interpreters. However, subway information is also shown in English, and choosing food and paying at the food stalls is easy enough to manage by intuition. Cards and mobile payments generally work, but some stall-type booths are easier with cash, so bringing a small amount of cash will give you peace of mind.

Fireworks, beach food stalls, and the paid Sunset Beach Club

The highlight of the festival is, of course, the Dadae Fireworks Show on opening night. It starts at the golden hour of sunset, opening with a water performance close to the shore and then expanding into a broad production that stretches across the entire sea. I watched it sitting on the sandy beach, and the moment when the sound of waves overlapped with the fireworks was what made Dadaepo special. However, on opening day, the number of people allowed on the sandy shore is limited for safety. If the limit is reached, visitors are guided to the Gouni Ecological Trail where the fireworks can still be seen, so if you want a good spot, it is safest to arrive well before sunset.

The center of food and drinks is 'Dadaepocha.' It is set up on the sandy shore with around 2,000 seats, one of the largest scales in the country, and there is an open stage with three sides open in the middle, so you can eat, drink, and watch performances at the same time. In addition, there are side programs such as 'Dadaeya Market,' linked with local businesses, a fountain playground for children, and the Dadae Beach Market featuring local artists and merchants. Marking its 30th anniversary, this year's festival is notable for its clear 'local coexistence' style, organized together by Busan youth and local businesses.

One thing to know in advance is the 'Sunset Beach Club.' This is a paid program with limited admission, so it is different from the freely open areas. It runs from daytime to night with DJ performances, a sunset countdown, headliner stages, yoga, and beach activities, so early reservation is recommended because it is popular. Practical tips to prepare before you go

Since this is a summer night beach event, it is not especially hard to prepare for, but a few things will make it much more comfortable. The sun is strong during the day, so bring a hat, sunscreen, and water. If you plan to walk on the sandy shore, sandals are good, and if you want to sit and watch the fireworks, a picnic mat will be very useful. The beach has been leveled for easier walking, and free parasol rental is also available, so it was not bad for avoiding the daytime heat. Restrooms and convenience facilities are in place to match the beach opening period, but they get crowded during the evening peak, so allow extra time.
