Why wind turbines were built on the coastal hill of Changpo-ri

Yeongdeok Wind Farm is located in Changpo-ri, Yeongdeok-eup, Yeongdeok-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, on the hill above Haemaji Park. Its coastal terrain, which receives abundant wind throughout the year, is closely connected to the site's suitability for a wind farm.

According to the site introduction, after trees were lost in Yeongdeok's major forest fire in 1997, the area was redeveloped as Haemaji Park and a wind power plant. Therefore, its present appearance is not simply that of an observation point but the result of transforming the post-fire hill into an eco-friendly energy facility and park.

Understanding the 24 turbines and 39.6 MW at a glance

The site has 24 wind turbines, with a total generating capacity listed as 1.650 MW × 24, or 39.6 MW. Each turbine has a capacity of 1.650 MW.

The hub height is 80 m, and the blade diameter is 82 m. Tourist information describes the length of one blade as 41 m, so when taking panoramic photographs, including people or trees for comparison makes the scale easier to appreciate.

The always-open outdoor site differs from the 09:00 exhibition hall

The outdoor area of the wind farm is open at all times and year-round, according to tourism information revised in April 2026. No separate admission fee for the outdoor site itself has been confirmed.

By contrast, the Yeongdeok Renewable Energy Exhibition Hall can be visited from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is closed every Monday, Lunar New Year's Day, and Chuseok. If Monday is a government-designated public holiday, it closes the following day. Plan your visit according to whether you want to see only the outdoor turbines or also enter the exhibition hall.

Experiencing wind, geothermal energy, and wave power for 1,500 won

Individual admission to the Renewable Energy Exhibition Hall costs 1,500 won for adults, 1,200 won for soldiers, and 800 won for teenagers and children. For groups of 15 or more, the fees are 1,000 won for adults, 800 won for soldiers, and 500 won for teenagers and children. Tickets are purchased from a vending machine before entry.

At the exhibition hall, visitors can experience the Changpo foot bath, a solar prism, and a music box powered by solar energy. Exhibits also cover geothermal power, the internal mechanisms of wind turbines, wave, tidal, and small-scale hydropower, biomass, and a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle model, making it quite different from an itinerary focused solely on photographing turbines.

A route from Windmill Park to the Blue Road A Course

The site includes Windmill Park, a children's playground, an aircraft exhibition area, and an auto campground. Outdoor facilities around the Renewable Energy Exhibition Hall include a solar prism, a solar-powered music box, a Wind Sound Garden, and an outdoor deck stage.

The site connects to the Yeongdeok Blue Road A Course, and the walking trail offers views of both the East Sea and inland Yeongdeok. Some visitors report briefly touring the site itself, while others say they allowed half a day including the exhibition hall. A half-day itinerary is therefore realistic if you plan to include children's activities.

20–25 minutes by car from Yeongdeok-eup; public transportation takes much longer

Information indicates that it takes approximately 20–25 minutes by passenger car from Yeongdeok-eup to the wind farm. The official route from Yeongdeok-gun is to turn right from Donghae-daero toward Ganggu Port and travel 242 m, then turn right onto Ganggudaege-gil for 5.9 km, turn left onto Haemaji-gil for 4.1 km, and turn left again before traveling 32 m.

Current bus route numbers and service intervals have not been confirmed. Past travel records state that it took about 30 minutes by bus from Yeongdeok Terminal to Ganggu Bus Terminal, followed by about 45 minutes from Ganggu Bus Terminal to Haemaji Park. Foreign visitors should show their destination again using a map app at the terminal and prepare for the possibility that return buses may not run frequently.

The official facility information lists parking for five large vehicles and 100 small vehicles. Some materials introduce the wind farm parking lot as free, but this has not been directly confirmed on the official facility page, so this article treats it only as information based on 2023 materials.

Parts of the access road are narrow and winding, and vehicles traveling to and from the wind farm mean that drivers should proceed slowly. The wind can be strong enough to feel colder than the coast, so bring a light outer layer even in summer. Visitors using strollers or wheelchairs should distinguish between the level main entrance and the outdoor walking route when planning their visit.

Check the access limits before taking photographs

The wind turbines themselves can be viewed outdoors, but the site is not presented as a place where tourists can enter the interior of the generating facilities. Because no confirmed information is available about photography restrictions or whether English guidance and audio guides are offered, follow staff instructions and signs around the exhibition hall and facilities first.

The aircraft exhibition area is introduced as one of the site's attractions, but 2026 reviews mention that, unlike in the past, entry into the interior of the fighter aircraft is prohibited. Since actual conditions may differ from old photographs that appear to show access to the cockpit, it is more accurate to plan on viewing the aircraft from outside.
