Moisture and condensation causing mold and moss are major conservation threats. During the conservation process, the entire Seokguram grotto was dismantled and reassembled from 1913 to 1915, and a concrete dome was installed. In the 1960s, a second concrete dome was added over the original dome. Notices state that taking photos or videos inside and bringing in food or beverages are prohibited.

The route from Bulguksa to Seokguram is described as 3 km along a mountain-ridge hiking trail or 9 km via the new road. Since walking uphill is said to take about one hour, taking the bus is the practical option. By car, the route climbs the mountain for approximately another 15–20 minutes from Bulguksa, continuing along a winding mountain road.
The remaining 15 minutes beyond the 600 m level path and ticket office
Arriving at the bus stop or parking lot does not mean you can immediately see the principal Buddha. You must walk approximately another 600 m to Seokguram, and visitor reviews record that it takes about 15 minutes from the ticket office to the statue.
This final section is introduced as an almost level mountain promenade and is not particularly difficult, but official wheelchair and stroller accessibility information for people using mobility aids could not be confirmed. A recommended schedule is to allow about 30 minutes for the round-trip walk from the parking lot or ticket office, in addition to viewing time. The approximately one-hour walk from Bulguksa should be calculated separately.
