How Wansan Library Became an Independent Publishing Space in 2024 after Opening in 1989
Jeonju Wansan Library opened in 1989. It was temporarily closed in the first half of 2023 to transition into an open creative library, then reopened on July 29, 2024, as an open multifunctional cultural space.
The reopened building has a total floor area of 6,258㎡, extending from one basement level to three above-ground floors. When Jeonju Municipal Library Kkotsim opened in Jungwha-san-dong in December 2019, the main library functions were transferred to Kkotsim. Wansan Library, however, was reorganized as a hub for Jeonju, a city of publishing culture centered on independent publishing and citizen creativity.
A Space for Making Books Yourself Rather Than Just Reading Them in the 6,258㎡ Building
The remodeling included rearranging the interior and exterior spaces and changing the interior design. The current spatial concept goes beyond simply browsing materials and is a multifunctional space that accommodates book writing, exhibitions, performances, and media creation.
The remodeling plan included a themed exhibition space, book café, materials rooms, and a support space for writers, with a total project cost of 5.5 billion won. A dedicated space for writers called the “Jajakjajak Book Workshop” was newly established on the third floor and was introduced as a space specializing in independent publishing, where citizens can write and publish books themselves.
How to Find Jeonju’s Living History in About One-Third of the Materials Room
About one-third of Wansan Library’s general materials room was introduced as a reference materials room. It contains history books, genealogies, materials related to traditional Korean music, and local history materials, making it useful for researching Jeonju’s history.
A multicultural materials room was also introduced as being in operation and is known as a municipal library materials room that handles Japanese-language books. If you need to find local materials or family and regional history related to Jeonju, it is more efficient to ask staff first about the locations of the reference materials room and multicultural materials room rather than looking only around the general reading areas.
Open Until 10 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday; Check Regular Closing Days Before Visiting
Wansan Library’s general and children’s materials rooms are listed as open from 09:00 to 22:00, Tuesday through Sunday. On Saturdays and Sundays, the hours are 09:00 to 18:00. However, the materials rooms are closed every Monday or Friday, depending on the reference information, as well as on public holidays, so check the regular closing day before visiting.
The reading rooms are closed on January 1, New Year’s Day, and on the day of the Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays. The address is 306 Baekje-daero, Wansan-gu, Jeonju-si, Jeonbuk State (Jungwha-san-dong). When arriving by bus, search for stop 30697 or 30680, Hwasan Gymnasium · Jeonju Municipal Library Kkotsim, as the destination.
From stop 30697, the library is 100 m away, about a 1-minute walk, and the wheelchair travel time is listed as approximately 4 minutes. From stop 30680, it is 220 m away, about a 5-minute walk, and wheelchair travel takes approximately 8 minutes. Since individual bus route numbers and transfer information from cities such as Seoul and Busan were not confirmed in the official information, the safest method is to search for the stop names above in a map app after arriving in Jeonju.
19 Parking Spaces and 3 Hours of Free Parking at Hwasan Gymnasium
The Kkotsim parking lot at Jeonju Municipal Library has 19 spaces. Since there are not many parking spaces, visitors arriving by car should consider the outdoor parking lot at Jeonju Hwasan Gymnasium as well rather than relying only on the library parking lot.
Visitors to the library can use the outdoor parking lot at Jeonju Hwasan Gymnasium for three hours free of charge if they request it at the first-floor desk. General parking rates and alternative parking guidance when the lot is full were not included in the available operating information, so drivers should first ask at the first-floor desk about the procedure for applying the free parking benefit after arrival.
Programs Once Available at the Jajakjajak Book Workshop
The August 2024 reopening celebration program included “A Life Theater with Words and Pictures.” In this intergenerational writing program, university students and citizens aged 60 and over met to share life stories; students majoring in creative writing wrote the text, while art students drew the illustrations, which were produced as a storybook.
In “We Will Turn Your Story into a Book,” citizens’ diaries, novels, poems, and other works were made into advance copies using a publishing machine, and participants proofread the manuscripts and created the covers. A program for making calendars using pet photographs was also operated, and the results could be exhibited for those who wished. Program applications were available through the Jeonju Municipal Library website or by visiting Wansan Library, and the telephone number for program inquiries at the time was 063-230-1873.

Wansan Library is a multifunctional cultural space containing general and children’s materials rooms, a reference materials room, a multicultural materials room, exhibition and performance spaces, and a support space for writers. Third, check the locations of the general and children’s materials rooms, reference materials room, multicultural materials room, or creative spaces at the entrance. Although the materials rooms are listed as operating until 22:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, regular closing days may vary depending on the reference information, so it is better to check the closing day before visiting if you plan to use the materials.
