Have you ever seen a live firefly in Korea? I never saw one in the city. But every June at the Chungcheongbuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in Ochang, Cheongju, the entire lawn square turns into a firefly stage. Now in its 16th year, the Firefly Insect Festival is an event that lets you experience ecology and nature conservation firsthand through fireflies and insects. It was not a grand amusement-park-style festival, but a calm, heart-softening atmosphere where you walk across the grass holding your child’s hand, touch insects, and follow the firefly lights at night.

The venue is the area around the lawn square of the Chungcheongbuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, 46 Gagok-gil, Ochang-eup, Cheongwon-gu, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do. The Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services held the 15th Firefly Insect Festival for three days, offering a space for midsummer night romance and ecological education at the same time, and planned it as an ecology-education experience event where visitors could see and learn about the ecology of fireflies and various other insects firsthand, encompassing not only children and families but also experts interested in the insect industry. So from daytime insect exhibits and hands-on booths, the flow naturally leads into the firefly experience after sunset.

From the daytime insect hall to nighttime fireflies — a family day route

The key part of this festival is the evening. Looking at the operating hours from a previous edition, it ran from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., which shows that the truly main event is the dark night when the fireflies glow. So I recommend arriving in the late afternoon. If you go when it is too hot during the day, it is easy to get exhausted outdoors, and you may not have enough energy left when it is time for the fireflies.

When you arrive, first check out the indoor and tent-based programs such as the insect exhibition hall and the children’s insect classroom. There are 35 ecology-education experience events including a nighttime firefly experience, an insect experience hall, and a children’s insect classroom, and exhibition and sales booths run by insect-related companies and farms are also operated. There is a section where you can look at specimens directly and observe bees or butterflies up close, so even children who were afraid of insects gradually became curious. The main guidance is in Korean, so English explanations are limited, but because it is a hands-on, observation-based experience, you can still enjoy it without understanding every word.

And then, when the sun goes down, it is the moment everyone has been waiting for. With the newly created firefly experience center, the scale of the nighttime light experience has been greatly expanded, allowing many visitors to enjoy the mysterious dance of the fireflies. Once you enter the dark space and your eyes adjust, you can see little green dots floating through the grass. Flash photography is absolutely forbidden — if you shine a light, the fireflies disappear, and it ruins the experience for other visitors too. I recommend putting your phone in your pocket and enjoying it with your eyes only.

Book in advance, bring cash — practical tips to avoid a wasted trip

The first thing to prepare is your reservation. For visitor convenience, an online reservation system was introduced through Naver Place, and you can make a reservation by searching for 'Chungbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services' or 'Firefly Insect Festival' on Naver Map. The nighttime firefly experience can get crowded, so if you already know the date and time you want to go, it is better to reserve in advance for peace of mind. Since same-day conditions on site may change, check the official channels once more right before your visit for the operating hours.

As for food, food trucks are operated, so you can handle dinner on site. However, because this is an outdoor event, some booths or food trucks may prefer cash, so bringing a little cash along with your card can help you avoid awkward moments. Also, even though it is a June night, the lawn square can feel cooler than expected and there are mosquitoes. A long-sleeved outer layer, mosquito repellent, and sneakers suitable for walking on grass are almost essential. Going to the restroom before the firefly time is also a small but important tip. Once it gets dark, finding your way around becomes inconvenient.

So who is this for?

It is a little inconvenient to access by public transportation alone, so taking a taxi or a rental car from downtown Cheongju is the most convenient option. Ochang is located north of the city center of Cheongju, so it is a good idea to decide in advance how you will get back after the event ends at night. Having a taxi app installed can greatly reduce your worries about getting home.

If you are expecting flashy night views or fireworks, this is not the place. But for families who want to see real live fireflies with their children, or travelers who want to experience a humble local ecology festival in Korea, it is a perfect fit. That night, walking slowly along the green lights above the grass instead of city lights, is something I think I will remember for a long time.
